Aftercare in BDSM refers to the practices and actions undertaken by participants before, during, and after BDSM activities. The goal of aftercare is to check on the well-being and emotional state of all involved — both during and after play — and to handle any issues that might arise.
However, despite aftercare being a topic frequently discussed by experienced members of the community, it is often not properly defined or explained by newer participants.
According to BDSM expert Kyn MacGregor, aftercare involves checking in with your partners to see how they feel or how things are going during the play. "Aftercare can be in the middle of the play as well as after, but the common theme is communication and attention to the well - being of all involved," MacGregor said.
"Aftercare is taking care of your partners when things are not okay," she said. "Four phases to aftercare are before, during, after, and action taken if there is a problem during play."
